Wondrous West
Artwork by Lee Silliman
Open from July 7, 2025- September 27, 2025
The sublime landscapes of the trans-Mississippi West came to symbolize what America presented as its counterpoint to the ancient and richly cultured past of Europe. Americans could point to their unique, diverse, and beautiful national parks and other natural treasures as emblematic of the country’s greatness. Citizens were encouraged to “See America First” as a patriotic duty. Indeed, tourism to our natural resource shrines was promoted as foundational to understanding American identity. Even Native Americans, whose homelands were wrested from them, possessed distinctive cultures that were proudly subsumed into this national narrative by civic promoters.
This exhibit displays the early visual imagery published in government reports, travel books, railroad brochures, souvenir albums, illustrated newspapers and magazines, postcards, art prints, and travel bureau materials. “Come see what the American West has to offer” beseeched these prints. The allure still remains.
For the Love of Wildlife and Wildlands
Artwork by Phil and Traci Douglass
Opening July 4th, 2025
In their latest exhibit, Phil and Traci Douglass invite viewers to experience the boundless beauty of the American West through their eyes—and their art. Each painting tells a story, drawn from personal experiences exploring wild places and encounters with wildlife. Their deep reverence for nature and in God’s creations are woven into every brushstroke.
While they both enjoy creating art independently, they also frequently collaborate—an unusual yet harmonious partnership that adds a unique dimension to their work.
Many people are curious about how two artists can work on a single canvas. Their process is a blend of science and artistry: Phil, a wildlife biologist with over 30 years of experience, begins by photographing and sketching wildlife scenes, then lays down the underpainting. Traci, a seasoned painter with over three decades of experience, brings the final piece to life by adding layers of oil paint, infusing the work with warmth, depth, and emotion. Their shared love of nature—and of each other—shines through in every finished piece.
Traci’s artistic journey began early in life. Her inspirational painting, Lo, I Am With You Always, has sold over 70,000 copies. In addition to her work as an artist, she has served her community for 40 years as a part-time RN in Weber County and recently opened a teaching studio called Art That Inspires.
Phil retired in 2018 from the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources after a 32-year career dedicated to conserving Utah’s natural heritage. Now, he’s found a new way to study wildlife—through art. “It’s a whole new way to connect with nature,” he says. “I love it.”
Together, Phil and Traci Douglass bring to life the wonder of the wild, celebrating not only the landscapes and animals they encounter, but also the faith and partnership that fuels their creative spirit.
